ATM Statement on Independence Day | June 12, 2023
This year marks the 125th anniversary of Philippine independence. Our nation’s heroes and people fought hard to earn our independence, making the Philippines the earliest modern democracy and republic in Asia. Just like our ancestors, the Filipino people of today are deep in their struggles towards self-determination in the communities.
In mining-affected communities, residents and indigenous groups are putting up barricades, organizing local creative actions and vigil rallies, and lobbying government officials and institutions to stop destructive mining operations and uphold local autonomy. They are not enjoying freedoms. Environmental and human rights defenders are risking their lives challenging large-scale mining companies and abusive government authorities.
They demand respect for their right to determine for themselves the development track of their localities. They fight for their right to a safe environment and healthful ecology. More importantly, they exercise their democratic rights that the heroes of this nation valiantly fought for.
As we commemorate Philippine independence today, Alyansa Tigil Mina stands in solidarity with affected communities, civil society organizations, cause-oriented groups and environmental defenders that continue to advocate for democratic values, human rights and environmental issues. We vow to continue fighting for the protection of our environment and communities and resist damaging mining operations and policies.
