We at Alyansa Tigil Mina raise serious concerns about the aggressive push for mining, especially in the context of critical minerals needed for supposedly clean energy.
Mula sa perspektiba ng mga komunidad, ang pagmimina ay nagdudulot ng kasiraan - mula sa pagkakalbo ng bundok, paglalason ng tubig, hanggang sa pagkawasak ng kabuhayan ng mamamayan.
Ito ang ilan sa mga dahilan kung bakit maraming komunidad ay tutol sa pagmimina. Nguni’t sa gitna ng kanilang pakikipaglaban para pangalagaan ang kalikasan at kanilang buhay, ginigipit sila ng mga dambuhalang korporasyon, pati na rin ng pamahalaan. Patuloy nilang nararanasan ang paglabag sa kanilang mga karapatan at pagkasira sa kapaligiran.
We maintain that the ADB’s “climate-smart mining” ignores these negative impacts in mining-affected communities and that supply chains are not properly assessed.
For instance, while the Green Climate Fund is investing heavily in e-mobility, sources of EV batteries are causing widespread destruction.
Moreover, the overconsumption of the Global North is not being questioned. In the meantime, the Global South is unjustly expected to deliver the material and mineral requirements of the world’s wealthiest countries. This needs to be changed.
On a more practical level, there is an urgent need to develop and implement a robust and expanded cost-benefit analysis (CBA) of mining projects. These should incorporate the social and environmental costs as well as the impact to health and human rights brought about by the extractives industry.
Unless these are determined and the impacts to the communities are considered more than the interests of profiteering corporations, there will only be more false solutions to the climate crisis.
We therefore ask the public to join us in rejecting ADB’s techno fixes and their attempts to greenwash destructive mining operations.
