ATM calls for de-escalation of mining projects on Typhoon Yolanda’s anniv
ATM Statement | November 6, 2025
On the 11th anniversary of Super Typhoon Yolanda, Alyansa Tigil Mina (ATM) called on the government to de-escalate mining projects in the country as mining worsens the impacts of disasters and leaves communities severely devastated.
“Government should rethink its policy of revitalizing the mining industry given the vulnerability of the Philippines to typhoons and heavy rainfall,” says Jaybee Garganera, ATM National Coordinator.
“Due to climate change, typhoons are becoming stronger and more frequent. Mining increases the risks of erosions and flashfloods during typhoons since forests are cleared and there are no longer trees in mining areas that could absorb heavy rainfall,” he said.
Garganera added that government must seriously pursue adaptation and mitigation measures to address climate change.
“In particular, we should not only become better at disaster preparedness, we should also stop activities that make the impacts of typhoons even more disastrous,” he concluded.
