Mining or Food?
We are pleased to announce the publication of the second report from the British Working Group on Mining in the Philippines (WGMP).
Led by the Rt Hon Clare Short MP, the WGMP is well known for its first report "Mining in the Philippines: Concerns and Conflicts" which expressed deep shock at the destructive mining practices at work in the Philippines.
This new study was conducted at mining sites in Midsalip, Zamboanga del Sur; Libay, Zamboanga del Norte, Tampakan, South Cotabato; Pujada Bay, Davao Oriental; Victoria, Mindoro and Sibuyan Island, Romblon. The report makes clear that the food production in these areas will be damaged beyond repair if mining continues, and that continued mining will threaten the entire nation's food security. With the threat of a global economic crisis looming, and the rice shortage of some months past fresh in the minds of all - this is not a risk we can afford to take on the promise of some investments.
If the question is mining or food, then what will our answer - our government's answer - be?
The report will be launched on February 4th, 2009. More details will follow.
